Permeable Paving

From 1 October 2008 new planning regulations came into force. You can no longer pave over your front garden without considering where the surface water may drain to.

You do NOT need planning permission when a new driveway uses permeable (or porous) surfacing which allows water to drain through, such as gravel, permeable concrete block paving or porous asphalt, or if the rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally.

If the surface to be covered is more than five square metres planning permission will be needed for laying traditional, impermeable driveways that do not control rainwater running off onto roads.

Installation

The suitability of permeable paving is dependent on soil type. Basic preparation is the same regardless of finish, with full excavation, site clearance and setting of levels. All edges must still be concreted into position. Unlike standard block paving which is laid on an MOT type 1 base, sharp sand and finished with a kiln dried joint finishing sand, permeable paving requires a sub- base of 20mm washed aggregate. The blocks are then laid on a 6mm washed aggregate, compacted and jointed with 6mm aggregate.
